The exhibition presented at the museum
in Impruneta is meant to illustrate how the Virgin can channel hope
and strengthen the faith of a people that have turned to her over
time as a dispenser of graces, protectress as well as a performer
of miracles. The spreading of the veneration for this image kept
in Impruneta has led, since the mid-1300’s, to the enlargement
of the parish housing her into a basilica, as the gratitude of the
devotees gradually has assembled, in Her honor, a very rich treasure.
From the museum’s permanent collections, the exhibition intends
to highlight some of the most meaningful pieces, magnificent ex voto
objects assembled mostly between the 17th and the 18th centuries
on the occasion of the majestic processions during which the greatly
venerated icon was solemnly transferred to Florence: they are reliquaries,
crucifixes, altar paraments and hangings as well as the magnificent
silver frontal from the basilica altar. All works are by the best
artist-artisans of the period, such as Cosimo Merlini, and from clients
of a high social level, such as the Medici family, and in particular,
the Grand Duchesses Cristina of Lorraine and Maria Maddalena of Austria,
extremely devout to the Virgin and generous donors, or such as Anna
Maria Luisa. Particularly worth mentioning is the renowned Reliquary
Cross of the Passion, extremely valuable for its materials and exquisite
workmanship, made in the grand ducal workshops and donated to Santa
Maria del Fiore at the beginning of the 17th century.
